Lignitic coal occurs in Tertiary basins south of the British Columbia-Yukon border, east of Lower Post on the Alaska Highway, along the Liard River.

In 1978, a diamond drilling project conducted by Placer Development intersected thin and poor quality coal seams; no other information is available.

The area appears to be underlain by fine clastic sedimentary rocks of the Cambrian-Mississippian Road River and Earn groups.
